Goal

To prepare the student in such a way that he/she can be able to completely understand structure of human body so that they are competent enough for dental practice.

Objectives


  • To understand the comprehensive structure of human body and particularly head and neck.
  • To correlate the structures with the function of each organ.
  • To know the interrelationship of structures with respect to function.
  • To know the importance of anatomical structures and their applications in dentistry.
  • To know the approach to various organs, in the human body.
  • To be able to identify each structure to encounter it properly during dental practice.
  • To be able to understand positions of various organs radio graphically.
  • To understand the general embryology and special embryology of head and neck.
  • Their congenital anomalies which may be encountered during clinical practice.
  • To understand the normal microscopic anatomy, so that any abnormality could be depicted in clinical practice.
  • To understand the tissue-organization in the body.

List of facilities available in the department

We have got 6 major sections in the department.

1. Lecture hall

  • 1 no. with necessary fittings and adds.(LCD projectors, OHP & Board).

2. Dissection – Practicals hall

Practical hall (Used for dissection & demonstration)
  • With washing and lighting facility.
  • Ten dissection tables, each for ten students.
Cadaver room
  • To embalm the cadavers, with 2 preservation tanks to store the dissected specimens and bodies.
  • Organs in the abdominal & pelvic cavity.
A room with band saw
  • To cut the cadavers for various section.

3. Histology – Practical hall (To study Microanatomy)

  • With adequate lighting both natural and artificial lights fitted. It has got seating arrangements for 50 students at a time with individual microscopes and slides.
  • Preparation room: Attached to histology practical hall. This is meant for preparation of slides and to store them along with other equipments.

4. Museum (1 No.)

  • This hall accommodates all the study specimens. They are mounted specimens belong to all parts of the head and neck region.
  • It also accommodates charts, related models with gross anatomy and embryology. It has got seating arrangements for 60 students. Related photograph of specimens are also mounted, so that the students can easily understand the subject during their study and revision.

5. Library (Departmental)

  • Adequate number of books (48) related to all regions of the body, especially head and neck including embryology, histology, gross anatomy, etc are available for both staff and students.

Facilities


  • Department of physiology caters to the teaching needs of both UG and PG levels of Dentistry as per the Dr. M.G.R University and D.C.I norms.
  • The physiology section of our general library has a large collection of standard text books, reference books, books for higher learning and research material.
  • Our laboratory provides the latest and sophisticated equipment and fascilities to conduct all the experiments as per the syllabus.The microscopes provided for the students are of high standard with good resolution and lighting. The lab can accommodate upto 100 students comfortably at any time.
  • The faculty is highly experienced and qualified as per DCI and Dr.MGR University norms, The HOD of the department is an M.D with more than 40 years of teaching experience.
  • Students are given periodic tests to assess their knowledge as well as assit them in coping up for their exams. We conduct student friendly interactive sessions, discussions and seminars to improve their knowledge and make the students actively participate in the learning process.

Objectives

The major aim is to provide a sound but crisp knowledge on the biochemical basis of the life processes relevant to the human system and to dental practice.

Profile for the department and the facilities available

Department of Biochemistry consists of well qualified staff and skilled technical assistants. The lab is very well equipped to carry out Under Graduate and Post Graduate practical work. The teaching faculty encourages the students to present scientific talks at National level Conferences. The teaching Faculty also attends National and International level Conferences and presents scientific papers. A well functional Clinical Biochemistry lab is attached to the Dental College Hospital.

Objectives


  • Understand the basics of various branches of microbiology and be able to apply the knowledge relevantly.
  • Apply the knowledge gained in the related medical subjects like the general medicine and general surgery and dental subjects like oral pathology, community dentistry, periodontics, oral surgery, paedodontics, conservative dentistry and oral medicine in higher classes.
  • Understand and practice various methods of sterilisation and disinfection in dental clinics.
  • Have a sound understanding of various infectious diseases and lesions in the oral cavity.

The aim of the department is to bring out a balanced and harmonious development of the body, mind and the soul. The academic excellence of the department is coupled with the most experienced teachers and competent teachers. The department has all the basic facilities and other infrastructure for running both BDS and MDS programmes and also support research activities going on with in the campus. We introduce the students to the exciting world of microbes and make them aware of various branches of Microbiology, their importance, significance and contribution of each branch to mankind and other fields of medicine. Teaching objectives have been achieved by lectures, demonstration, practical exercieses, audio visual aids, group discussion with regular feedback.

Objectives

The Department of pharmacology provides and inculcate rational and scientific basis of therapeutics for the clinical dentistry students, by making them understand the fundamentals of drugs and their effects on humans and also allowing them to apply the imbibed knowledge attained through teaching by use of appropriate drugs in dentistry with consideration to its efficacy and safety during usage.

The Department of Pharmacology is well established with well qualified staff, necessary infrastructure and more than adequate facilities. This department has good academic record, consistently producing best results.

Laboratory

The department has a neat, spacious, well lit and well ventilated pharmacology laboratory suitable for conducting dental pharmacology practical classes. The laboratory is well equipped with all necessary instruments and equipments. It is managed by the staff and well qualified technical persons.

Lecture classes

The department has got an excellent lecture hall which can accommodate 100 plus students. The lecture hall is equipped with blackboard along with audio visual facilities to enable effective presentation.

Library

Along with the main college library, department is equipped with a good departmental library which houses the necessary books in pharmacology for easy access to the students.

Academic programmes

The academic programmes consist of didactic lectures, seminars and group discussions. Emphasis is always stressed on the dental applications and implications. This has a tremendous impact in the clinical application of this subject as revealed by feedback from the clinical departments.

The students are given periodic tests in order to improve their performance in the university examinations. This has enabled to produce very good results. So far, the department has produced a large number of distinctions and first classes in the university examinations.
